You've decided to get a regular cleaner in. Good call. Now comes the question nobody warns you about: how often? Every week feels like a lot. Every second week feels like it might not be enough. And monthly starts to look suspiciously like "a deep clean with a long gap."
This is the weekly vs fortnightly cleaning question, answered straight: what each schedule looks like in a real home, what changes in the gap between visits, and who should pick which.
What changes between weekly and fortnightly
The clean itself is the same. A cleaner does the same rooms, the same jobs, to the same standard whichever rhythm you choose. What changes is how much has built up by the time they arrive.
Think of it as the difference between wiping a bench that was clean seven days ago and one that was clean fourteen days ago. Neither is a disaster. But the second one has had twice as long to collect fingerprints, spills and the odd mystery smear.
Bathrooms and kitchens are where you'll feel it most. Soap scum, toothpaste splatter and greasy bench film don't take long to show up, and they're harder to shift the longer they sit.
Weekly cleaning: who it suits
Weekly is the right call when your home takes a beating between visits. That usually means one or more of these:
- Kids. Small people generate mess at an impressive rate. Sticky handprints, crumbs under the table and a bathroom that somehow always has water on the floor.
- Pets. Fur, paw prints and the occasional muddy lap of the lounge room. A week is about how long most households can ignore it before it starts to bug them.
- Allergies or asthma. Dust and allergens build up quickly. A consistent weekly clean keeps levels down far better than a fortnightly one.
- Busy working households. If everyone's out all day and wiped by the evening, the house gets used hard on weekends. Having it reset every seven days takes a real load off.
- Larger homes. More bathrooms and more floor space means more to maintain, and a fortnight can stretch a long way.
The upside is that each visit is lighter. Because nothing has had time to bake on, the job is mostly maintenance, and your home stays at a steady "ready for visitors" standard rather than swinging between spotless and overdue.
Fortnightly cleaning: who it suits
Fortnightly is the sweet spot for plenty of households, and there's no shame in it. It tends to work well when:
- It's a smaller household. One or two adults, no pets, out during the day. There just isn't that much mess to make.
- You tidy as you go. If you wipe the bench nightly and keep on top of the dishes, a fortnightly clean handles the heavier jobs without anything getting out of hand.
- Budget matters. Fortnightly means fewer visits, so it costs less over a month. For many people that's the deciding factor, and it's a sensible one.
- You want the big jobs covered. Floors, bathrooms and dusting done properly every second week, with you handling the daily upkeep, is a very workable split.
The trade-off is that each visit does a bit more catching up. A fortnight is long enough for bathrooms to need some elbow grease, so the clean can feel more like a reset than a polish.
Weekly vs fortnightly cleaning, side by side
| Weekly | Fortnightly | |
|---|---|---|
| Build-up between visits | Light | Moderate |
| Bathrooms and kitchen | Stay fresh | Fine, with some daily wiping |
| Best for | Kids, pets, allergies, big homes | Smaller households, tidy habits |
| Cost over a month | Higher | Lower |
| How the home feels | Consistently clean | Clean, then gradually lived-in |
How to choose without overthinking it
Ask yourself three quick questions.
How does the house look by day five? If you're already feeling it by midweek, weekly will suit you. If you can still live with it comfortably at day ten, fortnightly probably covers you.
Who's making the mess? Kids and pets push you towards weekly. A calm, tidy household pulls you towards fortnightly.
What do you do in between? If you'll do a quick tidy and bench wipe most days, fortnightly works. If cleaning only happens when someone comes to do it, weekly keeps things from sliding.
Not sure? Start fortnightly and see how it feels. It's easy to move up to weekly if you find yourself wishing the cleaner was coming sooner. It's a little harder to feel good about dropping back down, so starting lower and stepping up is the safer experiment.

What about monthly?
Monthly works as a top-up on top of a home you're already keeping tidy yourself, but it's a long gap. By week three most homes have noticeably slipped. If a monthly clean is what fits your budget right now, it's still better than nothing. Just go in expecting a bigger job each time rather than a light refresh.
